【TOMO雙語爆】大猩猩保護幼童 史有二則前例

Harambe， a 17-year-old western lowland gorilla， was shot and killed after dragging the boy around a moat because zookeepers feared for the child’s life. The incident sparked a public outcry and brought our relationship with these magnificent endangered creatures into focus. Critics who argue Harambe was in fact protecting the boy can point to two historical precedents to back up their claims. In 1986， a 5-year-old boy fell into the gorilla enclosure at Jersey Zoo in the U.K.， breaking an arm and fracturing his skull. With the child lying unconscious， a male silverback named Jambo stood over the boy and protected him from other gorillas. When they boy regained consciousness and began to cry， Jambo and gorillas standing nearby ran away. It was at this point that an angry young gorilla arrived on the scene. Seeing that the animal posed a threat to the boy’s life， two zookeepers and a paramedic entered the enclosure. One of the zookeepers fended the angry gorilla off with a wooden stick while the other men tended to the boy. The paramedic then helped rescue the boy as the pair were pulled out of the enclosure. 10 years later， a 3-year-old boy fell nearly 20 feet into the gorilla enclosure at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. He was picked up by an 8-year-old female gorilla named Binti Jua. The gorilla had recently become a mother and carried her own baby on her back. Binti Jua carried the boy to a door in the enclosure and guarded him from other gorillas. Paramedics were then able to retrieve the boy， who had a broken hand and cuts to his face. So it’s clear that gorillas have a history of protecting children who fall into their enclosures. Both these stories have happy endings.
